Could You Walk for Lent, Covering 40 Miles in 40 Days for ALABARÉ?

We're calling on supporters to get walking this Spring, to nurture their own wellbeing and also help those in need.

ALABARÉ Walk for Lent Women Walking

ALABARÉ is calling on supporters to Walk for Lent this Spring, to nurture their own wellbeing and also help those in need.

The initiative encourages participants to cover 40 miles in 40 days – whether that’s a mile every day to spread it out or take on a few longer walks to complete the distance.

The challenge starts on Ash Wednesday (18 February 2026), with a target to complete your miles by Easter Sunday (5 April).

A stroll to the shops, taking the dog out, or a power-walk around the park can all count towards your total.

Registration is free of charge, with donations and sponsorships welcomed towards our mission to break the cycle of homelessness.

Why You Should Put Your Best Foot Forward

Walking is recommended by the NHS as a simple way to build stamina, boost heart health and burn excess calories, but getting outside for a stroll can also improve mental wellbeing.

It can be a way of getting out into nature, meeting others for connection and socialisation, and providing some spiritual enrichment.

ALABARÉ’s Boots on the Ground wellbeing programme includes many walking activities to improve fitness, lift spirits and reduce loneliness.

More than two-thirds of our participants (67%) say they feel more positive after taking part in walks as part of their support pathways.

This Lent, your walks and support of ALABARÉ will help us to provide homes, restore hearts, and empower minds for people at risk of homelessness, and help you to feel energised and compassionate.

Where Your Money Will Go

By joining the Walk for Lent challenge, you’ll raise funds that provide:

  • Safe accommodation for those with nowhere else to turn.
  • Specialist mental health support to help people rebuild confidence and stability.
  • Pathways to independence, giving hope for a brighter future.

Throughout 2026, the charity is highlighting the links between mental health difficulties and homelessness.

Losing your home can lead to anxiety, depression, and isolation, while untreated mental health conditions can make it harder to keep a job or maintain housing.

Revd Gill Turner-Callis, Senior Chaplain at ALABARÉ, said:

“This time of the year is all about reflection and self-discipline, remembering Jesus’ time in the wilderness and the sacrifices made. Walk for Lent is a powerful way of living those values of compassion and generosity, alongside the long-term personal benefits of taking time for yourself, and your physical and mental health.

“We’d love to see lots of people around the South West and Wales getting out and about to support us and our mission to break the cycle of homelessness, just by putting one foot in front of the other. I’m really looking forward to taking part, and will be covering the miles on dog walks each evening after work.”

You can share your journey during the challenge using the hashtag #WalkforLent.

Participants are also able to buy Walk for Lent t-shirts, to show others what you’re doing and have a memento once you’ve gone the distance.
