Going Tribal

A well-rendered pencil study depicting imagery from folk culture throughout Africa. Mounted on grey board (size of artwork). The artist states: ‘Each piece I have sketched is genuine – wood carving, images found in huts, fabric patterns, stone and rock paintings, a head dress and head rest. In the centre is a stunning wood carving, depicting an elephant feeding, created by the Benin tribe in Nigeria. All the sketches are of work created across Africa: The Dagon Tribe in Mali, Zambia, Northern Congo, Rhodesia, Dahomey, Ghana, Congo-Kinshasa, ivory Coast, and my personal favourite – the Bushman Rock painting from Tsisbab Ravine in South West Aftrica. Even the carved pattern around the edge is from a carved ivory jug in Nigeria. It was amazing to research and learn so much creating the piece – so I wanted to give an insight into the origins of the pieces shown’
