Prison crisis and the impact on homelessness prevention
With it being proposed that thousands of individuals will be released from prison early due to overcrowding, Alabaré is warning of a looming crisis in homelessness prevention if supported housing and rehabilitation programmes aren’t safeguarded.
Supported housing is crucial in reducing crime and easing pressure on the prison system. Offenders in stable accommodation are 50% less likely to commit further crimes. This not only positively impacts the public purse but also provides homelessness prevention allowing offenders to find work and access treatment for addictions and mental health problems.
Alabaré believes that without access to housing, thousands of individuals will be left vulnerable, increasing the strain on public services, and will open up direct pathways to re-offending.
Studies show that 79% of prisoners who were homeless before custody are reconvicted within a year, compared to 47% of those with stable housing1. Yet, 70,000 supported homes are at risk of closure due to financial pressures.
Alabaré Commits to Break the Cycle of Crime
Charities like Alabaré are stepping in to bridge the gap. In addition to providing supported housing across the South West and Wales, Alabaré has invested in transformative homelessness prevention programmes, like Boots on the Ground and the Burnbake Prison Art Project to give homeless people hope, a sense of purpose, and a path to success.
“This isn’t just about housing, it’s about breaking the cycle of crime,” says Andrew Lord, Chief Executive at Alabaré. “Without stable accommodation, ex-offenders are far more likely to end up back in prison. We need urgent government action to protect supported housing and invest in rehabilitation.”
Alabaré stresses that housing is not just a social issue but a public safety imperative. Without secure accommodation, the chances of successful reintegration plummet, and the burden on the criminal justice system continues to grow.
