“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Power of Polo; it’s been incredible. I have never ridden a horse or done anything like this before. I’ve made memories for life.”
“Taking part has given me confidence to try new things – once I’ve got over my initial anxiety, I always give 110 per cent. Looking forward, I definitely want to look for employment opportunities in the equine world now!”
Boosting mental health and building confidence
Sport and outdoor activities play a vital role in supporting young people mental health and wellbeing, offering more than just physical fitness. Through teamwork, resilience, and social connection, sport helps reduce stress, boost mental health, and build confidence. By engaging in our wide-ranging and innovative activities, young people develop essential life skills that promote emotional balance and a sense of belonging; key factors in preventing isolation, as well as improving overall mental health and physical wellbeing.

Polo Programmes
Over the last two years, young people supported by ALABARÉ have been taking part in 4-day residential events in partnership with the Power of Polo. These activities help young people, who have in some cases not seen, let alone ridden a horse before, learn life skills: patience, perseverance, communication, and trust. Together, we help individuals, including care leavers and those struggling with their mental health, step outside comfort zones and realise that limitations can be overcome within a safe, structured environment led by fully accredited HPA (Hurlingham Polo Association) instructors.
Real Impact: 4-Day Residentials
One recent programme, delivered in partnership with Cool Hooves Polo and generously supported by Polo for Heroes, brought together eight participants: five military veterans and three young people from ALABARÉ. Most had never ridden before. Over four intense days, they learned riding and polo basics, practised key shots, cared for horses, and even visited Guards Polo Club for a tour of the Royal Box.
The impact was profound. Jay, who was awarded Best Horsemanship, shared:
“For me, personally, this has been a journey because I don’t have much resilience. I don’t get out and talk to people, and I wouldn’t be here without the teams and charities who’ve supported me. I’ve learnt patience, resilience, horsemanship…it’s been incredible.”
Transformation
Grace, named Most Improved Rider, reflected on her transformation:
“I’ve built a lot of self-confidence this week, doing things myself and pushing myself out of my comfort zone, rather than just sticking where I’m comfortable. It’s been really good for my anxiety and my mental health in general, and I’ve loved making a connection with my horse!”
Gemma Snell, Young People’s Wellbeing Lead, says, “At ALABARÉ, collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. Partnering with Power of Polo has allowed us to open doors for young people who have faced homelessness and mental health challenges, giving them access to a safe, inspiring environment where they can grow. Together, we are not just offering a sport, we are creating opportunities for belonging, aspiration, and brighter futures.”
Young People Overseas
Our Young People Overseas Programme is a unique wellbeing programme designed to unlock potential and create opportunities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Through personal development, cultural exchange, and global learning experiences, we aim to build confidence, broaden horizons, and inspire future ambitions. We believe every young person deserves the chance to grow, explore, and thrive, both at home and abroad.
For many, this is their first time travelling outside the UK, a transformative experience that fosters independence, resilience, and a deeper understanding of other cultures.
From language immersion and team-building activities to hands-on workshops and local excursions, every element is designed to boost self-esteem, enhance prospects, and create lasting memories.
Young People Outdoors
Our outdoor activities programme is committed to helping young people discover the benefits of nature, adventure, and shared experiences.
Through practical outdoor activities and confidence-building challenges, we aim to promote wellbeing, encourage teamwork, and inspire personal growth. From campfire cooking and woodland skills to fun experiences like bowling and go-karting, we create opportunities that foster resilience, independence, and a sense of belonging.
Weekly sessions at our Badgers Camp in Salisbury include fire-making, cooking over an open flame, site maintenance, and creating spaces for relaxation alongside our veteran community to develop intergenerational social connections to support those who may have struggled to develop role models in their lives.
