“I came to ALABARÉ in a state. I was an addict, homeless and had let people walk all over me. I wouldn’t let anyone near me at first, and now I have a family of friends that I have never had before. I used to run away and hide, now I stand, I can smile now on the outside and inside, where before I only smiled on the outside!  ALABARÉ have built my confidence to go out the door and reach out.”

About Boots on the Ground

Walking and outdoor activities are more than exercise – they’re life-changing. ALABARÉ’s Boots on the Ground programme helps veterans and vulnerable adults reconnect with nature, improve wellbeing, and rediscover purpose.

Heritage Missions That Heal

We also offer heritage trips, such as our Mission to Malta and Operation Gibraltar, providing veterans with the opportunity to explore and restore historic sites, acquire new skills, and strengthen bonds through shared experiences.

Mission to Malta

ALABARÉ veterans’ Mission to Malta was part of a joint initiative between the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) and Heritage Malta. The team helped preserve Fort Delimara by cleaning, removing rust, and painting to protect the historic structure’s integrity.

They also worked at the AFM Delimara Outpost under the supervision of the AFM Property Management and Development Branch.

Operation Gibraltar

Our ALABARÉ team of Armed Forces veterans visited Gibraltar to help restore Lord Airey’s Battery, which sits on top of the iconic Mediterranean rock. The team’s commitment and energy were instrumental in moving the restoration forward and preserving this piece of Gibraltar’s military heritage for future generations.

I don’t usually go out much due to social anxiety, but Boots on the Ground allows me to meet new people in a comfortable environment. It helps me to stay active and learn a lot about things that interest me. It helps me to interact with people and pursue my interests, which will hopefully lead to employment soon.

“The challenges were mentally and physically challenging, but the BOTG staff and service providers were patient and encouraging, and there was no pressure to do anything.”
