Support services: Neil’s story

At Alabaré we offer a range of support services to meet individual needs.

Neil's Story

Neil’s journey to recovery wasn’t easy, and he struggles to pinpoint exactly when he started using drugs.

He recalls using substances occasionally with his ex-partner, but what started as once-a-week use quickly spiraled into daily drug and alcohol consumption. Neil found himself trapped in an endless cycle of substance abuse, relying on cocaine to get high, and other substances to come down.

The cycle of addiction

After leaving his partner in hopes of turning things around, Neil soon fell into another destructive relationship. This led to a rapid descent back into addiction. Before long, his addiction cost him his access to his children and family, and his life hit rock bottom.

Everything changed when a close friend suggested Neil reach out to Alabaré. Desperate for help, Neil did just that. While his first attempt was a setback (he failed a drug test), Alabaré’s team encouraged him to return, offering him a second chance. Neil credits Alabaré’s team with helping him get on the path to recovery. They helped him secure doctor’s appointments and enroll in a comprehensive drug recovery program.

A new beginning with support

Neil spent three months at Alabaré, and during that time, he made tremendous progress. He got up everyday, took care of himself, and even started going to the gym. His self-esteem improved, and those around him could see the positive changes. For the first time in years, Neil was able to reconnect with his parents and, eventually, get his children back.

In November, Neil faced a health scare when he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalised for five days. After his release, he stayed with his parents briefly before returning to Alabaré. One of the residents found Neil after his heart attack and called an ambulance, helping to save his life. The residents and team continued to support Neil, ensuring he took his heart medication and didn’t overexert himself as he continued to recover.

Thanks to the unwavering support of Alabaré’s team, Neil has turned his life around. Recently, Neil was supported in moving into his own home, a place where his children can now visit and stay. Neil’s son even wrote to the team, expressing his excitement about being able to stay at his dad’s home again.
