Marks Story

help homeless with housing

Building bright futures

Mark’s story is one of perseverance, growth, and hope. After serving three years in the Army and leaving with good conduct, he struggled to adjust to civilian life. Day-to-day living outside the structured environment of the military was overwhelming, leading him to face significant challenges, including mental health struggles and substance misuse.

In 2017, Mark was referred to our service by Conwy Local Authority. He arrived with considerable anxiety and other mental health challenges, compounded by a lack of confidence and direction. At the time, he was not suitable for employment due to his severe anxiety, but his resilience and willingness to engage albeit cautiously with support marked a change for Mark.

A foundation of support and growth

With staff encouragement, Mark sought help from Veterans NHS Wales and attended numerous health appointments. It was his engagement with the Alabaré Boots on the Ground, however, that proved pivotal as it offered him consistent support that improved his anxiety and social interactions. Over time, his confidence began to grow and his mental health showed significant improvement.

Discovering creative outlets was another breakthrough for Mark. The Winter Green Art project allowed him to explore a hidden talent for art. The calming and focused environment became a safe space for him to thrive, and for nearly two years, he consistently participated in the program which not only bolstered his confidence but also gave him a sense of purpose and joy.

A quiet but determined spirit

Mark has always been considerate and pleasant, maintaining good relationships with the staff and his peers. We often have to reassure Mark that he is not “bothering” staff,  so over time his ability to reach out when he needs is a testament to his trust in the support system around him.

Although Mark has found the supported housing environment beneficial, his long-term goal has always been to live independently. He has made excellent strides in personal responsibility, managing finances with care, and maintaining his living space to a high standard.

Preparing for independence

Moving Mark into independent living has been a priority, though his anxiety posed challenges. In October 2024, Mark received exciting news: he was offered a one-bedroom flat by the Local Authority, located in a nearby town with excellent access to transport and amenities. This opportunity marks a monumental step toward the independence he has worked so hard to achieve.

A bright future ahead

Though Mark will be leaving our supported accommodation after six years, he plans to continue attending our activities and wellbeing projects, recognising the structure and purpose they bring to his life. While full-time work remains unlikely due to his mental health, Mark is open to volunteering as a way to build confidence and engage socially.

Mark now feels more able to voice concerns and stand up for himself, a significant development that reflects his growing self-assurance and resilience.

A testament to perseverance

Mark’s journey is a reminder of the power of consistent support, understanding, and determination. Despite his challenges, he has achieved a level of independence and self-confidence that seemed distant when he first joined us. As Mark moves into his new home, we wish him all the very best and share our pride in all that he has accomplished.
