Major Ken Hames continues as an Alabaré Ambassador
From COO of Veterans' Self-Build Scheme to Alabaré Ambassador

As we celebrate the success of the second year of the Veterans’ Self-Build experience, we are delighted to announce that Major Ken Hames (Rtd) will continue his invaluable work with Alabaré as an Ambassador
Ken Hames, is stepping down from his role as Chief Operating Officer for Alabaré Veterans’ Self-Build. Scheme, has been an inspiring leader and driving force behind the programme. Drawing from his extraordinary 25-year military career—which included service in the Special Air Service (SAS), the Falklands War, and the First Gulf War—Ken brought his deep understanding of the challenges some veterans face transitioning to civilian life.

Ken helped establish the Veterans’ Self-Build initiative, which has transformed the lives of ex-Forces personnel. The programme provides not just housing but also training in construction skills, pathways to employment, and a renewed sense of purpose and confidence. His compassion, dedication, and vision have left a lasting legacy on the veterans and families who have benefited from the initiative.
Although Ken is retiring from his post, this is far from goodbye. As an Alabaré Ambassador, Ken will continue to champion our mission, using his experience and passion to advocate for vulnerable people and veterans in need.

Andrew Lord, Chief Executive at Alabaré said “I have known Ken for over 10 years. During this time he has consistently demonstrated a real drive and passion to help improve the lives of veterans, particularly through his role with the self-build. It is great to welcome him as an ambassador for Alabaré, where can continue to help the vulnerable people we serve and the charity.
“Ken, we are deeply grateful for everything you’ve done and thrilled to have you remain part of the Alabaré family in this exciting new role. Thank you for your unwavering dedication, and we look forward to continuing this journey with you.”
