Employment coaching: Jack’s story

Our young people programme builds skills and confidence to help young people lead successful adult lives.

Jack was seeking employment, and with the help of a coach was able to start a career in construction.

Jack was living in our Young People’s supported accommodation.

Jack met up with our Alabaré Academy Employability Coach, hoping to be able to find employment and have a stable income.  Together they focused on the areas where Jack felt least confident, including his numeracy and literacy and some of his problem-solving skills.  Over time they met regularly, and Jack felt ready to start actively looking for employment.

Building the skills for employment

Through regular sessions, Jack gained the confidence to start actively looking for employment. With the help of his coach, he learned how to craft a professional CV and the best strategies for searching for jobs online through search engines and job websites. These essential skills gave Jack the tools he needed to present himself effectively to potential employers.

Securing employment

Jack applied for several positions, and his hard work paid off when he secured a job on a construction site. Alabaré continued to support Jack by helping him purchase the necessary PPE clothing to start his new role, ensuring he was fully prepared for his new employment opportunity.

“The service provided by my coach was great.  I now have a CV and a covering letter.  I did not know much about covering letters before,” said Jack.

Impact of employment support

Jack’s story is a testament to the difference employment support can make to young people looking to gain independence. With the help of Alabaré, Jack successfully navigated the job market and found a fulfilling career path, giving him the tools he needed for future success.

It’s pulled me back to the person I was before the addiction got hold of me.

I’ve always cared for others, but once I got into the thick of it, it totally changed me. I want people to understand that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
