The charity's collaborating with social media star, Sam Balshaw, better known as Hungry Woman Cooks.

ALABARÉ Hungry Woman Cooks

ALABARÉ is thrilled to announce its collaboration with social media star and Salisbury resident, Sam Balshaw, better known as Hungry Woman Cooks.

The food influencer has more than 500,000 followers across Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, sharing recipes, life hacks, nostalgic treats, and homemade dishes for all tastes.

Sam’s involvement will also see her taking on the challenge of ALABARÉ’s BIG Sleep at Stonehenge on Friday, 14 November.

Sleeping under the stars to tackle veterans’ homelessness

The latest of ALABARÉ’s sleepout events will focus on raising awareness and funds to support former service personnel who are facing homelessness.

The charity has over 30 Homes for Veterans across the South West of England and Wales, designed to offer residents safe and stable accommodation, along with tailored support to help with things like improving physical and mental health, employability skills, or financial budgeting to move towards independent living.

As many as one in every 400 veterans is homeless, according to the latest Government figures, with ALABARÉ seeing a 122% increase in referrals for help in 2024-25.

ALABARÉ Hungry Woman Cooks

Hungry Woman Cooks has an affinity with the cause as a military wife herself, and sees the impact that leaving the forces can have on those who’ve served:

“ALABARÉ’s work is so important in teaching veterans how to function again in ‘normal’ society, without the cushioning of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Royal Marines, without the mothership of the forces holding them and letting them fly.

“Many veterans leave school at 16, go straight into the services and come out again without having the basic life skills, which ALABARÉ can help them to gain. I’m very proud of veterans, such as my husband and his friends, and that’s why I wanted to get involved.”

Sam says she’s delighted to be joining ALABARÉ at the BIG Sleep at Stonehenge, and support efforts to provide homes, restore hearts, and empower minds:

“I’m incredibly trepidatious about taking part, as my husband won’t be with me, and he knows how to do sleeping out as he did it a lot on exercise. I’m a little scared, but I’ll get to go home the next day to a warm shower, have something nice to eat, and enjoy the sofa for the day. Other people have to live with that every day, so what’s 12 hours of lost sleep in the great scheme of life, if it means I can help others.”

James Tomlinson, Director of Strategic Communications at ALABARÉ, said:

“Food brings communities together. We all have a favourite meal, but unfortunately, not everyone has the means to provide for themselves. With Sam’s support, we are raising the profile of the amazing work that ALABARÉ is doing to break the cycle of homelessness to an audience who we believe will unite for our cause.

“We’re delighted Sam will be joining so many other supporters at our BIG Sleep at Stonehenge, in support of our services for veterans. At a time when the demand for help is higher than ever, it’s vital we raise awareness and vital funds to ensure former service personnel are supported in their time of need.”

Join Hungry Woman Cooks at BIG Sleep Stonehenge

Places to join the BIG Sleep and spend a night with ALABARÉ at the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stonehenge are limited to just 200.

It’s the first time an event of this kind has been open to the public at the monument, and it will be a powerful moment of solidarity and compassion with veterans that will live long in participants’ memories.

During the night, supporters can take part in a stargazing session, with the top fundraisers also invited for an exclusive sunrise visit to the stone circle.

BIG Sleepers are encouraged to sign up now to avoid disappointment.
