Real people. Real stories.
This January, we’re asking you to consider the link between poor mental health and homelessness.
Our charity campaigns this year include Now You Hear Me, where you can Borrow a Voice, Not a Book – each book title represents a real‑life experience, creating a safe space for open dialogue and empathy.
By sharing human stories of resilience, we’re breaking the stigma and raising awareness of how poor mental health can lead to social isolation, job loss and, in many cases, homelessness.
The event will underscore the urgent need for integrated support services that address both mental health and housing insecurity, reminding our community that behind every statistic is a human story that deserves to be heard.
Now you hear me
This January, visit a book stall like no other – where the books have voices, and the stories are real. You’ll meet individuals who have faced mental health struggles, discrimination, and life-changing challenges, and hear their stories firsthand. It’s your chance to ask questions, listen deeply, and discover the human experience behind the labels.
Why does this matter?
Poor mental health is often both a cause and a consequence of homelessness. Through these powerful conversations, we’ll shine a light on how early intervention and community support can prevent crises and transform lives. By taking part, you’re not just attending an event – you’re helping to build empathy and create a stronger, more connected community.
Over the course of the year we hope to hold several pop up events in areas where we work. Details will be posted on our Events Page.
Come for the tea, stay for the conversation – and leave with a new perspective.

Homelessness is not always what you think. Typically, you may picture someone sleeping rough on the streets. But that’s only part of the story. Thousands of people are hidden homeless – sofa-surfing, living in temporary accommodation, cars or staying in unsafe environments. They’re unseen, usually unheard, and often unsupported.
Now You See Me is about changing that. Our campaign shines a light on the realities of hidden homelessness and calls for a compassionate, integrated approach: housing solutions combined with emotional, pastoral, and mental health support. Because a bed alone isn’t enough – people need care, often need to build connections, and have a desire to rebuild their lives. At ALABARÉ, we do not just provide shelter, we provide homes, restore hearts and empower minds.
During this year’s charity campaigns, we will be further developing this idea as we encourage people to break the stereotype, see the unseen, and create a future where everyone has the support they need – not just a roof over their head, but pathways to wellbeing, dignity and opportunity.
We all need someone to be there for us.
Thank you for being that someone.
Here are some examples of what your donation could help provide:

Allows us to host a transformative residential with life-affirming activities for those facing homelessness, working on suicide prevention, restoring confidence, self-worth, and hope through connection and nature-based activities.

A young person with a comfort pack full of homely touches. Offering young people more than warmth, but a sense of safety, dignity, and belonging.

A critical one-to-one session with a support worker. This quiet moment of connection, trust, and hope can be a lifeline for someone seeking to break the cycle and isolation of homelessness.

An essential welcome pack: Necessities like toothbrushes, toothpaste and toiletries for someone coming off the streets.

Over the past 35 years, we’ve learned a lot about homelessness and how we can help end it for good.
We know that homelessness doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It’s often the result of deeper issues like trauma, poor mental health, poverty, and a lack of opportunity. That’s why our support goes beyond just providing a bed for the night. We offer long-term, wraparound care that helps people rebuild their lives from the ground up.
Last year, we provided hundreds of people in our communities who had faced unimaginable trauma, whether from life on the streets or being alone with nowhere to turn, with the safety, care, and support they needed to rebuild their lives.
