Homes for Veterans Appeal
Crisis can strike anyone, even those who are trained to be the toughest of all.
“I would be dead right now if it wasn’t for the care I was given when I’d hit rock bottom. I had nowhere to go but the streets. That care saved me; it gave me hope and a future.”
The support John received is made possible thanks to caring people like you, our supporter family. Donations from caring members of the community, mean that vulnerable Veterans like John can have a room and support at one of our Homes for Veterans.
Our homes are specifically for Veterans because our residents tell us that they benefit from living with comrades who understand what they have been through. The Alabaré team are on hand with over 27
years experience caring for the homeless, and who have helped transform the lives of hundreds of homeless Veterans.
“Serving my country was the only thing I ever wanted to do. Life took a turn though when we were deployed to Iraq. I saw things like in a nightmare. My squad were moving up to a village near the frontline when two of our guys, my mates, were killed by an IED. Seeing that screws you up.”
When John was medically discharged following a back injury after his second tour, life was never the same again.
“Serving my country was the biggest privilege of my life. When I got back I got a job, but was made redundant. Physically I was in pain, my mental health crashed, I was having flashbacks…I couldn’t cope.”
John was deployed to Iraq in 2006. His mental health plummeted when he came home and he eventually became homeless. Every night we provide shelter and support for up to 120 homeless Veterans like John - but many more need your help today.
“The pride from serving was there, but now it felt like it was eating away at me; knowing how empty I was now. I was in tonnes of debt and got thrown out of my home. For two weeks I slept on the streets – the streets I had marched down with pride years before.”
Many of us know people like John - people who have fought on frontlines across the world, but who face their biggest battles when they come home.
A donation to our appeal means that when crisis strikes a Veteran like John, they never have to face sleeping rough on our streets. It will mean that many others like John, can continue to have this lifeline.
“As soon as I moved into Wiltshire Homes for Veterans, it felt like a huge weight lifted off me. I can’t describe the relief of not having to sleep another night on the streets. No one should ever have to face that. I am so grateful for the help I have been given. I’ve already paid off some of my debts, got medical support, and am able to look for work once more. I’ve still got a long way to go, but I know I will make it.”
We are so grateful for every donation that we receive for our Homes for Veterans. Our homes rely on the generosity of our supporters and the wonderful military charities who help fund us, to be able to continue this life-saving support.
Thank you so much in advance for your donation.
Together we will make sure that no other Veteran is forced to sleep on the streets.
