Gavin’s Story

Gavin, a veteran, moved into the Alabaré Wiltshire Veterans Home in late 2022, from a challenging home situation. Prior to his move, he lived in a caravan that was leaking, mouldy, and without electricity, while recovering from a leg operation. It took over six weeks for his Op COURAGE Support Worker to encourage him to accept veterans support and make this move.

Rebuilding connections

In November 2024, Gavin reconnected with his two older children, aged 17 and 19, which was a significant moment for Gavin, who had been navigating a difficult estrangement from his wife and an ongoing court process regarding child access.

Unexpected challenges

A few days later, Gavin’s son visited him, and the team learned that both had been evicted from the family home because they had been seeing their father and were now both at risk of homelessness. An Alabaré support worker, accompanied Gavin’s eldest child to the Wiltshire Council Homelessness Team while ensuring steps were taken to explore how best to assist the younger sibling.

Providing wider support

Together with Gavin, we guided his children through the housing application process. The children continued to visit their dad regularly, though Gavin confided that he was “just keeping his head above water financially.” With the collaborative efforts of veterans support agencies Op NOVA and Op COURAGE, Gavin has now successfully applied for a two-bedroom property through Homes for Wiltshire, giving him hope and greater future stability.

Creating a brighter Christmas

As Christmas approached, Gavin’s children continued to sofa surf with friends. Determined to bring some festive cheer, we sourced Christmas gifts and treats for the family, including chocolates, cakes, biscuits, and savoury snacks. The Wiltshire Community Foundation generously provided an £80 Tesco voucher, which was presented to Gavin on Christmas Eve which allowed Gavin and his children to enjoy a joyful and memorable day together.

Agencies pulling together

Thanks to the collective efforts of Alabaré, Op COURAGE, Op NOVA, and the Wiltshire Community Foundation, Gavin and his children experienced vital veterans support during a challenging time.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Wiltshire Community Foundation for their kindness and generosity during a pivotal time in this family’s lives.
