As a leader of The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for over three decades, she performs at the Proms, the South Bank, and at Glyndebourne. She has toured all over the world, working with some of the world’s greatest conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Roger Norrington, Ivan Fischer, John Butt and Maxim Emelyanychev. She directs the OAE Experience Scheme for young professionals – an exceptional initiative that brings together musicians from all over Europe.
As concertmaster, she led the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ton Koopman) in their ten-year Bach cantata project, performing and recording every cantata and touring worldwide. She was a member of The London Haydn Quartet for several years, and their CD of the Opus 9 quartets was hailed as ‘one of the great Haydn quartet recordings’.
She is well-known in Wiltshire as the Artistic Director of Music for Awhile, the ensemble she founded in 1996 with her husband, the late Simon Whistler. Their concerts in Alton Priors and elsewhere have brought musicians of international standing to villages all over the county, in performance spaces that invite an exciting intimacy with the musicians.
Margaret also lectures and broadcasts on aspects of performance; including her interest in leadership and social interactions in ensembles and possible additional meanings in Bach’s performance instructions for performers.
A graduate and Honorary Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, she is a bye-fellow of Girton College and Musician in Residence at St John’s College. She is the Artistic Director of the Cambridge University Collegium Musicum and holds the multi-faceted role of Director of Performance at the Faculty of Music.
She is the first holder of the Becket Chair of Historical Performance at The Royal Academy of Music, a Professor at the University of London and an Honorary Fellow of Birmingham Conservatoire, the city in which she grew up.
