Overcoming addiction: Dan’s story

We support hundreds of people who are homeless every year. We help each person with their finances, health and self-esteem and provide a stepping-stone approach back to independent living.

Overcoming addiction can affect every part of a person's life.

Overcoming addiction and homelessness with Alabaré

At the age of 16, Dan enlisted in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. However, his military career came to an abrupt end four years later when he was discharged due to a serious mistake. Influenced by a friend, he agreed to carry drugs in exchange for the promise of a free holiday and his life took a downward spiral from there.

Following his discharge, Dan struggled to maintain stability. Although the birth of his children provided a temporary sense of grounding, he found it difficult. He secured employment as a driller but ultimately lost that position, which led him further into chaos. By 2015, his addiction to heroin and crack cocaine had taken such a toll on his health that he nearly lost his life and required hospitalisation.

By this time his living conditions had also deteriorated. In 2013, he was evicted from his council flat after it was stripped of its valuables, including copper piping, as it became little more than a drug den. His addiction controlled his life, leaving him feeling trapped and hopeless. Withdrawal symptoms were unbearable, and he felt he was headed either to prison or an early grave.

Turning point

Dan’s life took a positive turn when his brother recommended he connected with Alabaré. Initially, he had to be given space to overcome addiction, and recover from years of instability and violence. The ability to unwind in a safe environment allowed him to rediscover his interests, such as watching history programmes and engaging in outdoor activities.

With the assistance of Jenny, his Alabaré Support Manager, Dan was placed on the housing list. He worked to clear his outstanding debts and was eventually allocated a one-bedroom flat in October which marked the beginning of his journey toward stability and independence.

Whilst living with Alabaré, Dan had the opportunity to rebuild his confidence and reestablish daily routines. He joined Boots on the Ground, from which he could start to build structure and purpose to his days. Over time, with renewed confidence he began to engage in activities he previously found daunting, such as using public transport and attending community art clubs.

Reflecting on his journey, Dan acknowledges that removing himself from negative influences and overcoming addiction was critical to his recovery. He encourages others facing similar struggles to seek support and have the strength to make a change, even if it means moving just a short distance away from toxic environments.

Support Manager’s perspective

Jenny, who has worked with Dan for the past three years, has witnessed his transformation firsthand. She highlights his increased confidence and willingness to participate in social activities. Tasks that once seemed impossible, like living and travelling independently have now become part of his daily life once again.

Dan says, “It’s just made me a better person. Now I go out with Boots on the Ground everyday, and I build my routines around that. I can do things I never thought I’d do years ago. Back then, I wouldn’t even go into a shop.”

Dan’s story is a testament to the power of resilience and the impact that a supportive team can have. Through structured assistance, a safe living environment, and personal determination, he has overcome addiction and moved on from homelessness to a stable and hopeful future.
