Hundreds attend event marking Clydach Hospital centenary
We've been pleased to welcome around 300 people to Alabaré's Homes for Veterans Wales for a family fun day.
A community event, hosted by Alabaré to celebrate 100 years of the Clydach Hospital in Swansea, has seen around 300 guests learn more about the site’s important history and heritage.
The family fun day on Friday, 8 August 2025 included live music, art displays, woodworking workshops, and entertainment, along with a treasure hunt and bouncy castle for younger visitors.
It’s been part of Alabaré’s commitment to the local community, marking a century of the hospital’s legacy, providing a chance to find out more about our work with veterans.
Our charity supports veterans in South and North Wales, as well as the South West of England, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, and we have four supported living accommodation spaces within the Clydach War Memorial Hospital site itself.
Those self-contained flats give veterans the help they need to start living more independently again, while staff are able to offer support with budgeting, building skills and employability, and encouraging involvement in physical activities to boost their confidence, sense of purpose, and camaraderie with others facing similar challenges.
We hope to break the cycle of homelessness by providing homes, restoring the hearts of veterans, and empowering their minds towards a brighter future.
The Clydach Hospital itself took in its first patients in 1925, in memory of local troops who’d made the ultimate sacrifice during World War Two.
Initially, the care provided there was for people who’d been injured while working in the mining industry, before the site was brought under NHS ownership in 1948.
After services closed there, the Hospital underwent a huge refurbishment in 2003, with community-based clinic services operating until 2015, and the site transformed into apartments from 2017.
James Cadmore, Alabaré’s Head of Veterans Services for Wales said:
“Thank you to the Alabare team and other organisations that made the 100th Celebration of the Clydach Hospital a huge success.
“It was great to see the local community coming together to celebrate with us, and I hope everyone had a great time.”
Alabare’s Homes for Veterans Cymru had the support of Swansea Council.
The authority provided backing through their COAST Activity Grants, aiming to be #HereForYouThisSummer.
