Homes for veterans: Adam’s story
At Alabaré, we understand the challenges veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life, particularly when it comes to securing stable housing. Our homes for veterans provide not just a roof over their heads but a supportive environment where veterans can rebuild their lives, regain confidence, and access vital resources.

Adam, an Army veteran in his mid-thirties, found himself homeless until he discovered Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans Cymru.
Today, Adam is thriving, having decided to leave his past behind and embrace the opportunities that have come his way through Alabaré’s support. With newfound confidence and a sense of purpose, he is actively building a brighter future for himself…
A safe place to start again: Homes for veterans
When Adam entered Alabaré’s homes for veterans in South Wales, he was given a safe and supportive environment to begin rebuilding his life. He worked closely with the Alabaré team to create a personalised support plan tailored to his needs. With this plan in place, Adam joined Alabaré’s Boots on the Ground (BOTG) programme, a series of outdoor wellbeing activities designed to support veterans’ mental wellbeing.
Personal growth through Boots on the Ground (BOTG)
Adam’s involvement in the BOTG programme has been a key part of his recovery. After attending a sailing residential weekend, Adam shared his experience:
“I went sailing with BOTG on a residential course where I didn’t just learn about sailing techniques, I learned a lot about myself and other veterans. The downtime was relaxing, and it gave me the opportunity to unwind, stop overthinking, and get valuable support.”
The opportunity to engage in activities like sailing has not only helped Adam develop new skills but has also played a crucial role in improving his mental health and confidence. Adam has found that these experiences, along with the ongoing support from Alabaré, have been instrumental in his recovery.
From homelessness to new hope
Reflecting on his journey, Adam said:
“A year ago, I was in such a difficult place. Others might have given up, but Alabaré gave me a home and a chance to build a future. I was completely honest with them, and they did not judge me but gave me the support and opportunities I needed to move forward with my life.”
Alabaré’s homes for veterans provide not only housing but also the support and community veterans like Adam need to make a fresh start. Through the Boots on the Ground team, Adam has gained confidence, leadership skills, and a renewed sense of purpose. He is incredibly grateful for the support he has received and hopes that other veterans in need can benefit from Alabaré’s services as he has.
The path forward
Thanks to the safe, supportive environment provided by Alabaré’s homes for veterans, Adam is now on a path to a brighter future. His transformation is a testament to the power of a supportive home and the dedicated services Alabaré offers to veterans in need. Adam’s story is just one example of how homes for veterans can help veterans rebuild their lives, regain their confidence, and move forward with purpose.
